Chapter Eleven

She woke up in bed with no recollection of getting there. Finn lay beside her, sprawled out facedown, fast asleep. Light spilled into the bedroom from the hallway. Apparently once they’d gotten here, neither of them had bothered with little details like turning off the lights.

She rolled toward Finn and felt her muscles protest the movement. God. She didn’t remember coming to bed but she remembered before. Remembered the dresser and then the couch and finally the shower. Had she fallen asleep in the shower? She was certainly naked. She lifted the sheet. So was Finn.

She dropped the sheet again before his ass could sidetrack her. God. That body. What he could do with that body. All sorts of wicked delightful things. And some slightly less delightful ones. Like stopping arguments.

Damn the man. He was dangerous.

She lay there watching him sleep for a few minutes, watching the rise and fall of his chest. Here. Solid. Real.

Finn.

She wanted to snuggle up against him, feel his arm around her, pulling her close.

Being close to him felt right.

Her hand tightened around the sheet. No. No yearning allowed. Her parents had been here and solid and real, too. Then they’d been gone in an instant and there’d only been grief and pain. Just as real and solid. Still here. She wasn’t going to risk that again.

Even if part of her wished she could.

Finn’s head turned toward her and she caught the gleam of his eye then the flash of teeth as he smiled at her.

“How long have you been awake?” he asked, sounding nowhere near awake himself.

“Not long.”

“Obviously I didn’t wear you out enough.”

“Seeing as I don’t actually remember coming to bed, I don’t think that’s the problem.”

He grinned. “Yeah, you kind of nodded off in the bathroom. Right after I wrapped you up in your towel. Cute. We’ll have to work on your stamina.”

“We had sex three times! I think my stamina is just fine.”

“I don’t know,” he growled and snaked an arm out from under the sheet.

She slapped his hand away. “Oh no, you don’t. Not unless you want me out of action for the next few days.” Her girl parts were feeling the workout. Good sore but sore nonetheless.

“Definitely not,” he said. Then he rolled up on his elbow. “So what are we going to do now that we’re awake?”

She peered past him. “It’s late. We could go back to sleep.”

“Or we could finish our discussion. About you going to California.”

“That’s not up for discussion. I’m going.”

“You haven’t sent in the paperwork yet.”

“No. Because the money for the tuition is in a term deposit that matures next week.”

He sighed. “Okay. I get it, you need to do your thing.”

“Yes. I do.” She did. “That’s why I said only until the end of the season.”

“I know. And I agreed.”

“Yes.” She hesitated. But had to ask. “You know, if you want out, I understand. Cut our losses.”

He sat up slowly. “Is that what you want?”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“I’m a big boy.
